Joint use partnerships can provide schools and communities with access to safe and attractive recreation facilities for physical activity. In this COURSE, Ms. Jerri Clark, the director of the School Health Services division of the Arkansas Department of Education, explains the applications of joint use agreements. Such agreements, which allow school districts and other community organizations to share available facilities, are cost-effective ways of maximizing local resources and increasing the number of physical activities available to children. Ms. Clark explains the necessary considerations for such a proposal, such as state laws and district policies, relevant time constraints, and facility limitations. Ms. Clark also provides information about the procedure for attaining funding for such a partnership through the competitive Arkansas Joint Use Agreement Grant.

Comprehensive sexual health education greatly impacts student success. This course provides health educators with guidelines on how to infuse sexual education into the general K-12 health education curriculum with the goal of promoting sexual health and preventing risk-related health problems. Also provided is information on the ideal unit structures for teaching sexual education as an integrated component of the Arkansas Health and Wellness Curriculum Frameworks, as well as information on abstinence only and evidence-based abstinence plus programs.

Dr. Wally Goddard shares with educators how high self-esteem has become more detrimental than helpful to children. Instead, he believes we should help children use their gifts. In this episode, Goddard explains three ways he believes we can achieve this. First, teachers must focus on a child’s strengths because every person has a gift. Second, it is necessary to teach children that no one has every gift. Third, we all need to use our gift to help others through some kind of service. Ultimately, by using our gift to help others; our gifts will help make the world a better place and individual’s self-esteem will be raised.
