NEW VISITOR CENTER OPEN AT BULL SHOALS-WHITE RIVER STATE PARK
The James A. Gaston Visitor Center is situated on a highpoint of the Bull Shoals-White River State Park that affords a spectacular view of the the White River-Bull Shoals Dam and Bull Shoals Lake.

The new facility serves as both a visitor center and an exciting discovery center, orienting each guest to the region and the park and interpreting the area's history and culture. State-of-the-art exhibits take visitors from the early days along the river to today's johnboat floating and fishing.

Just off the main lobby is the Johnboat Theater, a boat dock-themed orientation room with seating and boats typical of those from the regional Johnboat manufacturers.  It is here that "White River Stories," an exciting new video, introduces visitors to the White River system and the stories of its residents. The deck of the two-story observation tower offers spectacular views of the Bull Shoals-White River area.

Included in the design is an education wing, composed of partitioned classrooms, for the park's educational outreach programs and environmental education opportunities, which can be utilized by school districts in 19 Arkansas counties and 16 Missouri counties, all within a 75-mile radius of the park.

NORTHERN OHIO SCHOOL OPENS AT PARKIN ARCHEOLOGICAL STATE PARK
On Oct. 13, park officials, park staff and members of the community gathered at Parkin Archeological State Park for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the restoration of the Northern Ohio School, a circa 1910 one-room schoolhouse constructed by the Northern Ohio Cooperage and Lumber Company for the sawmill workers' children.

Parkin Archeological State Park is one of the Arkansas State Park system's two prehistoric American Indian mound sites that serve a dual role as both a state park and an archeological research station. The park is best known for preserving and interpreting the 17-acre Mississippi Period village that thrived there from A.D. 1000 to 1550, which many scholars believe was the American Indian village of Casqui, visited by the Hernando de Soto expedition in 1541. This rich aspect of the area's history has often overshadowed the early 20th century history of the site, so the opening of the restored Northern Ohio School represents a chance to see a slice of Arkansas history commonly overlooked.

LIBRARY, LITERATURE AND READING

MASTERPIECE THEATRE: CARRIE’S WAR, SUNDAY, DEC. 17, 8 p.m.

Nina Bawden, author of Carrie’s War, is a prolific writer of books for children and adults.  Of the 40 novels she has written, 23 are for adults and 19 are for children.  Many of her stories are based on the events of her own life.  Carrie’s War recounts the story of 14-year-old Carrie Willow and her younger brother who were evacuated from London during the World War II bombings there – just as Bawden had been evacuated.

Carrie and her brother were sent to Wales to live with the bullying and puritanical grocer Mr. Evans.  When Mr. Evans sends the children to fetch the Christmas goose from his elder sister's house, Carrie and Nick discover the mysterious Druid's Bottom. There they meet the strange Mister Johnny who speaks a language all of his own and fellow evacuee Albert Sandwich. But it is the wonderful housekeeper Hepzibah Green who makes everyone's time at Druid's Bottom so magical. Warm and welcoming, loving and caring with a special kind of insight into everyone's heart, Hepzibah tells a brilliant story and has the children spellbound with tales of the haunted forest and the legend of the screaming skull.
