What is TESS?

Arkansas took a critical step toward ensuring high-quality instruction and instructional leadership through the passage of the Teacher Excellence and Support System (TESS), which defines a support system for effective teaching and leading in Arkansas's schools. (Ark. Code Ann. ยง 6-17-2802 .pdf).

About This Site

This site contains two support features:

Teachers may access the TESS Teachscape Coursework to begin their hours of on-line training. The TESS Teachscape Coursework is located in the Resources library on the ArkansasIDEAS portal.

In an effort to support administrators and teachers in this endeavor, ArkansasIDEAS has also assigned each course in the professional development portal with a suggested domain component according to Charlotte Danielson's work, Enhancing Professional Practice: A Framework for Teaching. The framework divides the complex activity of teaching into 22 components clustered into four domains of teaching responsibility:

  1. Planning and Preparation
  2. Classroom Environment
  3. Instruction
  4. Professional Responsibilities
