As we explore the history and culture of this exciting and vibrant region, it is important to keep in mind just how unique the Arkansas River Valley really is.  It is an area that has one foot in the Old South and another in the American West, and that alone makes it a fascinating place to study its history and traditions.  It is also a place of deep rivers and dense forests, bustling cities and backcountry roads.  But most of all, it’s the people of the Arkansas River Valley who settled here over a century ago and also the people who call the valley their home today, that make it what it is.  However, to really understand the River Valley, we’ll have to take a tour of the geography and the history that helped shape this amazing part of our state.
